This is a blow-up of this mornings GOES Channel 4 (thermal infra-red band) image. It shows the current synoptic cloud pattern over the eastern United States. In order to begin to understand the dependence of the remotely sensed images on the temperature structure of the atmosphere, look at the corresponding temperature profiles for two sites, Buffallo New York and Washington D.C.
